Lost and Found: How to Get Your Business Listed on Personal GPS Devices

Have you ever noticed that your GPS device does not show many points of interest and local businesses? This can be a major concern especially to travelers who are new to the area and need to know where they can get a tank of gas or a hotel room. Business owners can benefit tremendously if they can be found easily by these travelers.

Being listed on a GPS device is relatively easy. The Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway would like to offer these tips that will aid you in your desire to be found and increase your tourism dollars!

  • You must get a D-U-N-S (Data Universal Numbering System) number.  This is a nine-digit identification number assigned to businesses that register with Dun & Bradstreet.
  • How to register: Go to www.dnb.com
Click the “D&B D-U-N-S Number” tab.
Follow prompts to submit your registration.
    Or call 866-785-0428

GPS manufacturers like Garmin obtain their information from NavTeq.  The information you register with Dun & Bradstreet is sent to NavTeq and your business will be listed on these devices.

You will also want to list with InfoUSA. They provide information to other GPS manufacturers such as Tom Tom. Go to www.InfoUSA.com registration is free.

The vision of the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway is to improve our rural economy by working cooperatively to enhance the visitor experience. Registering your business so it can be found on a traveler’s GPS device is one simple and easy way to do just that.
