The Dismal River is the most challenging, remote river in Nebraska. The Dismal River offers high adventure canoeing and kayaking. It is a very even flowing river with the upper reaches in a deeply entrenched inter-dunal valley that consists of many switchbacks, low hung trees and catttle fences adding to the challenge. Flow in the river is due almost entirely to groundwater discharge through seeps, springs, and boiling springs. Some boiling springs may be up 11 ft in diameter and 140 foot deep.
